How are students in the elementary grades taught Spanish?
A natural approach to language learning is used to teach Spanish in the elementary grades.
There is a greater focus on meaningful communication than on grammatical structure. Students are encouraged first to understand and then to produce in the language.
Students and teachers use the target language (Spanish) as much as possible.
Spanish skills and content are introduced and reinforced throughout the program. Students develop greater functional proficiency each year.
Concepts are presented through music, movement, games, story-telling, drama, literature, and technology.
Elementary Spanish themes include: Hispanic culture, numbers, colors, animals, clothing, food, family, body parts, opposites, holidays, sports, transportation, and community.
Authentic Spanish literature, songs, and poems are used to teach literacy skills to students in their second language.
